At Mall of Scandinavia in Solna, just outside Stockholm, we supplied a large installation of David Trubridge’s Kina, Kōura, Hinaki and Flax.

The four designs are suspended at different heights throughout the atrium, creating a loose, three-dimensional composition that can be experienced from several levels. Some fixtures appear high above, while others come down to eye level, giving the installation a changing rhythm as you move through the space.

A custom colour palette was developed for the project, with shades of orange, coral red, turquoise green and apricot used on the inner surfaces. From below, the colours become particularly expressive as the pendants glow from within, while from the galleries above, the intricate structures and patterns come into focus. The combination of colour, organic forms and natural bamboo creates a strong contrast to the otherwise clean and contemporary architecture.

The different forms give the group its character. Kina, Kōura, Hinaki and Flax each have a distinct silhouette, yet the natural bamboo construction and carefully controlled colour palette create a clear connection between them.

By repeating a small selection of designs and colours at different scales and heights, the installation feels considered rather than decorative. It becomes a recognisable visual element within the mall — changing with the viewpoint and revealing something different from every level.

Fixtures used

Kina references the inner shell of the local saltwater sea-urchin called kina in Māori.
Kōura pendant light was inspired by woven baskets and is the Maori name for the small, curled fresh water shrimps that live in New Zealand’s rivers.  Koura light is also available as …
Hīnaki was David’s first exploration into lighting in 1995 when he made a prototype based on fish traps which are called hīnaki by Maori.
Flax Pendant is based on the long slender leaves of the indigenous flax plant or harakeke in Maori that has long been grown for its valuable fibre.
