At this four-star beachfront hotel in Castelldefels, near Barcelona, David Trubridge’s Maru and Nikau bring a natural, sculptural element to the reception and lobby.
The interior is deliberately calm, with oak battens, pale stone and warm neutral tones forming the backdrop. Against this restrained palette, the lighting becomes part of the architecture rather than simply an additional decorative element.
Maru, whose name means “circle of life” in both Māori and Japanese, introduces a broad, elliptical form built from curved bamboo elements. Suspended above the reception and throughout the lobby, the pendants create a gentle rhythm and help define the different areas within the open interior.
Nikau provides a contrasting vertical form, hanging lower against the oak wall and echoing its linear pattern.
Both designs share the qualities that make David Trubridge’s work particularly suited to contemporary hospitality: natural bamboo, open structures and organic forms that remain visually engaging even when the lights are switched off.
A quiet lighting composition that connects natural material, craftsmanship and the relaxed character of the Mediterranean setting.
